As I gaze around the next bend of my journey as a counsellor educator, researcher, writer, artist, and consultant I consider what I have learned and what can leave behind as contributions to counselling and psychology. My intend here to profile some of what I have focused on over the past 25+ years of academic and professional life, with an emphasis on my most current work.

About Me

I currently live in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia in the Fernwood neighbourhood, which is known for its eclecticism, artistic culture, and community spirit. I acknowledge this unceded land as the Traditional Territory of the Lkwungen-speaking peoples of the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations. I recognize my position as a settler-colonizer on Turtle Island. I acknowledge the collective responsibility of settlers for the ongoing cultural oppression of Indigenous peoples and lands and the ways in which I benefit, both personally and professionally, from ongoing coloniality. I strive to actively oppose colonialism, psycholonization, racism, and other forms of social injustice in my life and work.

I appreciate the gift that we are all given to cherish and protect the land on which we live. I enjoy gardening, walking by the ocean, spending time with my spouse and my friends, appreciating the artistic expression and creativity of others, as well as doing my own painting and writing. I value the uniqueness of each person I encounter, embrace opportunities to learn more about myself and others, and believe in our individual and collective capacity to grow, change, overcome, and thrive.

I am privileged to have the freedom to pursue the goals of advancing cultural responsivity and social justice in counselling and psychology through my research and writing as well as my focus on teaching and learning. Please click on the links below to find out more about my most meaningful work.

My more recent research and writing focuses centring Indigenous worldviews in culturally responsive and socially just healthcare. I have been actively engaged in decolonizing myself and of my work, recognizing the limitations of conventional, eurocentric theory and practice of counselling and psychology. As I ally my energies with Indigenous colleagues and learners, I hope support reconciliation, particularly within the helping professions. I remain curious about how to best honour cultural diversity and advance social justice, both with individual clients and in the broader systems that impact clients’ lives. I attend to specifically to the needs of often-marginalized populations through my work, embracing critical race, feminist, disability, and other perspectives from authors and activists who disrupt current systems of oppresson. I recognize the intersectionalities of both identities and oppression in all of my work.

My newest ebook is a collaboration with Dr. Melissa Jay (co-editor). This book reflects my own learning and unlearning journey. It came into being through the creative and inspirational contributributions of 75 collaborators of diverse cultural identites, relationalities, and positionalities within disciplines of health and healing.

The book cover features the art of Kitana Connelly. The abstract painting is composed of four colours (mauve, green, white and gold) folding and billowing together to make a beautiful whole. At the top of the image is the title of the book, Decolonizing health, healing and care: Embodying culturally responsive and socially just counselling. Beneath the image the book editors are listed: Sandra Collins and Melissa Jay.

Click here for the abstract, table of contents, and purchase or review information. This book features 57 chapters, 46 videos, 97 audios, art by multiple contributors, a range of writing styles, and a wide diversity of views on health, healing, and care. Here is an example of one of the videos I created for the book:

I have a passion for innovation and creativity in teaching and learning. I recognize the sociocultural privilege inherent in access to education. I am committed to the removal of barriers to learning and to supporting full and equitable participation in society by all persons and peoples. Ultimately the individuals and groups we serve as counsellors and psychologists benefit from the quality and cultural responsivity of our education and professional development. I have devote energy to enhancing counsellor education, promoting online and distributed learning, advancing Indigenous and other culture-centred pedagogies, deepening my understanding of course and program design, and developing creative and multimedia learning processes and activities.

In recent years I have created open-source resources with a view to making learning more accessible. You can view some of these open-source resources in the following spaces:

Many of the videos in YouTube are featured in the book, Decolonizing health, healing, and care: Embodying culturally responsive and socially just counselling. Others are included in the open-source book: A Practical guide for counsellors: Co-creating safe and culturally responsive relational spaces that focuses on relational practices and counselling skills.

Here is an example of an animated video that provides a framework for conceptualizing client lived experiences drawing on an ecological systems lens to take into account social determinants of health.
